Bogotá was one of the stops I added to my itinerary when a coworker, who was going to visit his family for the holidays, offered a place to stay before I began my trip to Colombia. His family was beyond gracious in welcoming me to their home and doing everything to make sure I was ok.
On my first day I met up with Francisco, who I’d met in Santa Marta and hiked with in Tayrona National Park. We ended up seeing the National Museum, the Gold Museum, and then attempted to go to Monserrate. It was a beautiful day and the view from the top would have been beyond fantastic. However, this combined with the fare to take the gondola or funicular to the top being lower on Sunday than other days the line was well over an hour long.
The thing I loved about Bogotá were all the Christmas lights in many of the parks around the city and other special events that were put on for the holidays including the projected shows on the Palace of Justice (There are videos of these in the Google Photos link). I felt more of the Christmas spirit in Colombia than I usually feel in Seattle.
One of my favorite parts of Bogotá was the La Candelaria. I fell in love with the beautifully painted colonial buildings with many cute coffee shops and bakeries. If I had been staying closer to this area I would have been in those coffee shops every day.
Thanks to Martin I discovered a new fruit I fell in love with. If you get a chance try a Granadilla. It will change you life!
